Gastric Baloon

The gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach by an endoscopic procedure that is performed under light sedation. The procedure takes only about 20 minutes and you are able to go home after an hour or so.  However, you will probably need a week off work until you get used to the sensation of having the balloon in place. The balloon stays in your stomach for 6 months, and produces a feeling of fullness that means you eat less. You can expect to lose up to 3 stone in weight if you manage to follow a diet and exercise programme.
After 6 months (or occasionally earlier if you find the balloon uncomfortable) the balloon is removed by another 20 minute endoscopic procedure. All of the lessons you have learned and lifestyle changes you have made should now help you to keep off the weight you have lost.

The myGastricBalloon app for i-phone available from the App store has been developed to help our patients plan their weight-loss programme after gastric balloon placement.  It includes a month-by-month planner to help you keep to your programme and reach your goals as well as diet, exercise and psychology tips.

Gastric balloon placement is extremely safe but all medical procedures are associated with some risk. The Weight Loss Surgery Clinic will provide you with full information about the specific risks of this procedure.
